Know what you're buying
“Loft” on a listing can mean four different buildings. They live differently, finance differently, and appreciate differently.
Brick walls, old-growth timber columns, wood decking overhead. The classic warehouse conversion — the character is structural, and it cannot be built again.
Early-1900s reinforced-concrete factories: flared columns, deep window bays, serious floor loads. Quieter underfoot than timber, colder to the eye — some buyers prefer exactly that.
Zoned and laid out for both. Printers Row wrote the playbook; today it matters most to owners who actually run a studio, a shop or a practice at home.
New construction wearing loft styling — open plan, tall ceilings, maybe a brick feature wall. Nothing wrong with one, but it should not be priced like a conversion.
